For the 2022 Spring and Winter terms, Ludens Theatre Company designed and taught ICT's first ever full immersive theatre module for the BA Performance course.
Resulting in over 360 hours of class time, students engaged in a holistic exploration of the history, current field, practices, and business of immersive theatre. Students explored improvisational workshops, the work of landmark practitioners such as Augusto Boal, an in-depth study of current and recent popular immersive productions both local and international, collaborative working styles, devising techniques, fundraising tools, and networking tactics. Throughout the first term, students collaborated to workshop a concept for an original interactive immersive production utilizing the skills and practices discussed in class. A developmental showing was presented to students and faculty, and was ultimately green-lit for a fully-realized mainstage production, the first immersive production in the history of the university.
Over the course of the second term, students collaborated to create all aspects of their devised piece, including narrative beats, game mechanics, props, sets, costumes, script, alternate endings, and technological components. The resulting production was performed to public audiences for a week-long run.
